The Challenge
Ukraine faces one of the largest rehabilitation burdens in modern European history. War has produced relentless waves of complex trauma — blast injuries, polytrauma, and traumatic brain injury — colliding with a rehabilitation system that is fragmented, inconsistent in standards, and weakly integrated with surgical care. Patients who survive the operating room too often fail to recover function and independence.
Our Response
In partnership with Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital, GMKA is co-developing the national Rehabilitation Center of Excellence with the Ukrainian hospital designated by the Ministry of Health as the country's leading rehabilitation institution. The collaboration is built to deliver standardized, interdisciplinary, evidence-based care and curriculum — by Ukrainian clinicians, for Ukrainian patients — supported by American and international experts whose work combines deep hands-on clinical practice with experience designing national-scale rehabilitation systems and curricula in other countries.
