How the HealUA Mobile App Connects Physicians When It Matters Most
Timeliness, confidence, experience, and deep medical knowledge are essential for physicians to work effectively. These qualities are crucial not only for providing direct patient care but also for making informed clinical decisions. They become especially critical in times of war, when resources are limited and decisions must be made under intense pressure.
In response to these challenges in Ukraine, the Global Medical Knowledge Alliance, in collaboration with Empat Studio, developed HealUA — a mobile app that serves as a digital bridge connecting physicians around the world. It allows doctors to quickly seek second opinions or expert recommendations for complex clinical cases.
In 2024, HealUA was selected as part of the Startup Alpha program at Web Summit, one of the world’s premier tech conferences — a recognition that highlighted it as one of the most important startups of the year.
Dr. Mariia Pavlenko, a Ukrainian pediatrician and pediatric cardio-rheumatologist currently completing her pediatrics residency in the US, was among the early adopters of the app. She first installed HealUA a few years ago and now actively contributes to supporting Ukrainian doctors and patients. Together with other medical experts — including those from Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Stanford University — she collaborates on clinical case consultations through the platform.
“For me it’s more than just an app — it’s a simple way to make thoughtful, collaborative decisions and continue helping Ukrainian patients, even while living in the U.S.”
Dr. Pavlenko discovered HealUA through colleagues on social media. She describes it as a vital tool for physicians eager to learn, grow, and build confidence through shared expertise — while following evidence-based medicine and supporting colleagues in crisis situations.
How to Register on HealUA
- Ukrainian physicians can sign up using a mobile phone number, email address, and verification through the Diia app. If you don’t have access to Diia, you can still install HealUA, but some features will be limited.
- Physicians in the United States can register by verifying their NPI number (National Provider Identifier).
- For medical professionals from other countries, manual verification is available — simply submit a photo of your medical license, diploma, or ID badge.
How HealUA Is Used in Practice
“I use the HealUA app to provide recommendations on pediatric cases,” says Dr. Pavlenko. “I also regularly read through other cases because I’m always curious to see what my colleagues think. It’s a great way to learn something new or realize which topics I might want to review.”
Even experienced physicians use HealUA to explore clinically interesting cases or share their own for feedback. One of the most memorable moments for Dr. Pavlenko involved a child with a fever of unknown origin — a stressful, high-stakes situation with many unanswered questions.
“I offered some recommendations for initial diagnostic steps to help better understand the case. I hope the same approach will be useful not only in that situation but also for similar cases in the future.”
Who Should Try HealUA
“I believe HealUA is especially helpful for doctors who are just starting their medical careers,” Dr. Pavlenko says. “I remember being in situations where I wasn’t sure how to manage a patient and didn’t have anyone to ask — at least not someone I could be sure would give an evidence-based answer.”
HealUA provides a safe, collegial environment for learning and support — with no fear of judgment. It’s a tool that empowers doctors to ask questions, give or receive expert advice, and grow through shared clinical experience.
A Lifeline in Crisis — and Beyond
Whether you're a young resident facing uncertainty or a seasoned expert eager to share your knowledge, HealUA brings the medical community together when it matters most.
Created to support physicians during wartime, the app has become a model for how technology can strengthen health systems through global collaboration. Physicians can ask for a second opinion, contribute insights, or simply browse shared cases to expand their clinical understanding — all in real time, from anywhere in the world.
HealUA ensures no doctor is left alone when facing a clinical challenge — especially in times of war, crisis, or limited access to expert consultation.
