Anesthesiologist Daria Simchuk became the first physician from Ukraine to start an internship in the USA as part of a joint initiative by the Global Medical Knowledge Alliance, Harvard Scholars at Risk Program and Heal Ukraine Group.
The clinical internship program, which is designed to last 3 months, involves familiarization with the US health care system. During her visit to the United States, Dr. Simchuk will visit the Departments of Surgery, Intensive Care and Anesthesiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School (Boston, USA), and will also study the perioperative management at one of the largest American hospitals.
“I spent the first two weeks of my internship in a team of anesthesiologists who specialize in regional anesthesia at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, one of the largest hospitals in the United States. Every day I learn a lot of interesting information about the medical ethics ofpatient communication. My American colleagues are happy to talk about their own experiences,” Daria Simchuk shares her first impressions of the internship.
The doctor plans to devote most of her time to the intensive care unit, as, in her opinion, it presents the most variability between the American and Ukrainian healthcare systems.
“My task is to acquire the best medical practices and bring the experience gained in the USA to my Ukrainian medical colleagues. I sincerely thank the founder of GMKA and the entire organization for taking care of the future of Ukrainian medicine and the opportunity for professional improvement,” adds Dr. Simchuk
As a reminder, GMKA, together with partner organizations, has begun implementing a program of short-term internships for Ukrainian doctors, medical instructors, and scientists. In this way, the organization supports specialists in the field of Ukrainian healthcare whose opportunities for professional development have significantly declined following the beginning of Russian military aggression against Ukraine.
Detailed information about the next recruitment phase for clinical internships within the joint program of GMKA, Harvard Scholars at Risk and Heal Ukraine Group will appear later on the official websites of the aforementioned organizations.
