Ukrainian surgeons received training in Romania with the support of GMKA
In June 2024, the year-long online course «Principles of Surgery,» organized by GMKA for the training and professional development of young Ukrainian surgeons, concluded successfully. The course’s top performers received unique opportunities to continue their surgical education. The first-place winner was awarded a three-month internship at a US clinic, while the second and third-place winners, supported by GMKA and the Sergiu Duca Training and Research Center, participated in an «Anti-Reflux Surgery» course in Romania. This event took place from July 19-21 in Cluj-Napoca.
The course «Anti-Reflux Surgery», organized by the Sergiu Duca Training and Research Center in Romania, was designed for specialist surgeons and residents. GMKA’s participants included Oleksandr Boiarskyi, an oncologist from the Regional Center for Cardiothoracic Surgery of the Rivne Regional Hospital, and Sofia Lysetska, a surgeon and proctologist from the private clinic «Dobryi Prohnoz» in Kyiv. Both earned their spots by securing second and third places, respectively, in the GMKA «Principles of Surgery» course.
The participation of Oleksandr Boiarskyi and Sofia Lysetska in the course was made possible thanks to the financial support of GMKA and Sergiu Duca Training and Research Center.
Course Program
The Anti-Reflux Surgery Course program consisted of three days of intensive training.
- On the first day, participants attended lectures on anti-reflux surgery, conducted by renowned experts. They learned about the preoperative preparation of the patient, hiatal hernia repair, technical aspects of cruroplasty, Toupet and Nissen fundoplication, Collis gastroplasty, the development of the BICORNprocedure, based on Lortat-Jakob’s technique, and other modern methods. Each lecture was followed by discussions to share experiences and reinforce theoretical knowledge.
- The second day featured live surgery in the operating rooms. Professors Moustafa Elshafei from Germany and Davide Bonna from Italy performed two interventions, during which participants could ask questions and receive answers in real time.
- On the third day, participants engaged in live animal surgery, including cruroplasty, total and partial fundoplication, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and more.
