The GMKA Team Participated in the World Cancer Congress 2024
The Global Medical Knowledge Alliance (GMKA) participated in the World Cancer Congress 2024, held in Geneva from September 16 to 19. This event, one of the largest international gatherings focused on cancer control, brought together experts from around the globe. The GMKA team presented their research on medical care in Ukraine during the war and discussed the medical evacuation program for Ukrainian cancer patients seeking treatment abroad.
Dr. Nelya Melnitchouk, Founder of GMKA and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, participated in a panel discussion titled “Cancer in Emergencies: What Can We Do Better to Protect the Most Vulnerable?” This session explored strategies to improve the care of patients in crisis situations, especially the most vulnerable populations.
Inesa Huivaniuk, Surgical Oncologist at the Kyiv Regional Oncology Center and Executive Director of GMKA Ukraine, delivered an oral presentation titled “Cancer Care in Ukraine: Medical Evacuation and Beyond” during the session on cancer control in crisis situations. Her presentation was part of a broader discussion involving experts from countries affected by military conflicts and natural disasters, focusing on the challenges of maintaining cancer care during emergencies.
Maksym Horiachok, a sixth-year medical student (MS-6) at Bukovinian State Medical University and a member of the QI, Research, and HealUA groups at GMKA, presented two papers: “Multidisciplinary Cancer Treatment Capacity During the War in Ukraine” and “Factors Affecting Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Delays in Ukraine.” These presentations were part of a session focused on the challenges of cancer control planning in low- and middle-income settings.
GMKA’s participation at the World Cancer Congress highlighted the critical issues facing Ukraine’s healthcare system, drawing international attention to the challenges of providing uninterrupted cancer care in crisis conditions. Their involvement helped foster collaboration to develop practical solutions for treating cancer patients during wartime.
“We’re sharing our findings on the organization of cancer care and treatment in Ukraine to highlight the challenges our medical system is facing and to attract international support. Our goal is to ensure Ukrainian patients receive quality care, even in the most difficult circumstances,” said Inesa Huivaniuk.
The World Cancer Congress is a biennial event organized by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). It gathers leading oncologists, researchers, public health professionals, and philanthropists from across the world to share insights and innovations in cancer prevention and treatment. GMKA’s participation underscored Ukraine’s important role in the global fight against cancer, particularly in the context of armed conflict.
