The Global Medical Knowledge Alliance (GMKA) is honored to be selected as a Clinton Global Initiative Change Maker and to join the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) 2025 cohort of Humanitarian Response commitment-makers. Its innovative HealUA mobile application was also featured at the CGI 2025 as part of the What’s Working Way program.
HealUA enables secure, rapid peer-to-peer consultations among physicians in Ukraine and connects them with leading medical experts worldwide. This scalable solution is designed to save lives and improve patient outcomes by fostering knowledge exchange and capacity building. CGI’s recognition of GMKA reflects the innovation of HealUA and its potential impact on strengthening healthcare systems around the world.
Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s healthcare system has faced unprecedented devastation. More than 2,250 attacks on hospitals have destroyed operating rooms, ICUs, and cancer centers. Supply chain breakdowns delay medications and equipment, while staff shortages—driven by burnout, evacuations, and lack of subspecialists—leave clinicians overwhelmed. Rising complexity, from polytrauma to drug-resistant infections, makes timely expert guidance even more critical. Many physicians work in isolation, relying on insecure, informal channels, with patients' lives at risk,  and underscoring the urgent need for solutions like HealUA.
Already adopted by over 4,500 physicians across 40 specialties, HealUA connects medical professionals through a secure mobile platform. Verified physicians can submit cases, seek expert advice, and engage in peer-to-peer consultations via chat or video calls, fostering both clinical support and education. Contributors include medical experts from top medical institutions worldwide.
“At GMKA, we are committed to ensuring that no physician faces challenges alone or without access to expert advice,” said Dr. Nelya Melnitchouk, MD, MSc, FACS, Founder of GMKA, Surgeon at Mass General Brigham and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. “This is especially critical during wartime, when healthcare systems are under constant pressure. Access to knowledge saves lives, and through HealUA, that knowledge reaches those who need it most. Our model of rapid, free, peer consultation can be applied in war zones, refugee camps, field clinics, and remote areas. We are proud to share Ukrainian innovations with the potential to improve medical care globally.”
To date, GMKA and HealUA have achieved:
  • 98% response rate to submitted clinical cases
  • 500+ real clinical cases shared and discussed with robust expert moderation
  • Ongoing collaboration with international specialists to ensure best-practice recommendations
As part of its Commitment to Action, GMKA plans to:
  • Expand HealUA to 12,000 verified Ukrainian physicians.
  • Integrate an AI-powered assistant for real-time Ukrainian–English translation and evidence-based case summaries.
  • Recruit 200+ international experts to  provide specialized advice
Our goal is to achieve a median response time of under 240 minutes while ensuring that at least 95% of recommendations align with clinical guidelines, providing rapid and reliable support for physicians working in crisis conditions.
“Our goal is to democratize access to specialty expertise for every Ukrainian patient, strengthen digital health infrastructure, and establish a replicable model of physician collaboration in crisis zones worldwide,” Dr. Melnitchouk said.
Founded in 2005 by President Bill Clinton, the Clinton Global Initiative convenes world leaders, businesses, scientists, and NGOs to develop solutions to pressing global challenges. In line with this mission, GMKA’s team—comprising Ukrainian and international clinicians, clinical moderators, and product engineers—co-designs HealUA with frontline users. By collaborating with national stakeholders and global specialty networks, GMKA aligns priorities, recruits mentors, and ensures quality and privacy, delivering expertise where it is needed most to improve patient outcomes.
