The year-long online course Principles of Surgery, completed in June 2024, provided Ukrainian surgeons with advanced training and professional development opportunities. The participants, committed to evidence-based medicine and international treatment standards, demonstrated a strong dedication to continuous education and excellence in their field.
Based on the surgical residency training program at Harvard Medical School, the course covered essential aspects of surgery, adapted to the needs of Ukrainian doctors and interns. Speakers included surgeons from Brigham and Women’s Hospital (USA), Massachusetts General Hospital (USA), as well as experts from Italy, Poland, and Ukraine.

Who were the participants?

The course brought together 42 surgeons of various specialties from 16 cities across Ukraine. These participants — ranging from first-year residents to experienced surgeons — work in private practices, municipal and regional hospitals, as well as scientific and medical institutes. Notably, the cohort included surgeons from military medical institutions and the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Participants were selected from a pool of 204 applicants based on their English proficiency, motivation, CVs, and letters of recommendation. They all shared one essential trait: a strong drive to become better doctors for their patients.

What did participants gain?

  • Regardless of their level of experience, all participants acquired new knowledge and gained access to a modern platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange in the medical field.
  • Those who attended more than 75% of the classes and passed at least 80% of the tests received a Digital Certificate and earned 40 points toward continuous professional development.
  • Based on overall performance, the top participant was awarded a three-month surgical internship at a clinic in the United States.

How was the course organized?

The course comprised 38 online lectures delivered by leading experts in surgery. Participants had the opportunity to engage with lecturers through Q&A sessions and group discussions. For each topic, curated learning materials were provided, followed by testing.
