The nursing initiative aims to transform nursing education and practice in Ukraine. This partnership with Houston Methodist Hospital led by Shannan K. Hamlin, PhD, RN, aims to enhance the capabilities of Ukrainian nurses. The program is designed to address urgent nursing gaps identified through a comprehensive needs assessment, with a targeted approach to upskilling Ukrainian nurses in key areas such as ICU management, infection control, wound care, ostomy care, basic life support, and trauma care.

Nursing Program Design and Milestones

Q1 2025

Expert educators from Houston Methodist create “Quality and Safety in Nursing” course based on critical needs identified in assessment. Trained 1987 Ukrainian nurses  with significant improvement in knowledge and confidence across all topics.

Q2 2025

23 high-impact instructional videos developed by Houston Methodist on instructional key nursing procedure videos, translated and disseminated to over 2,000 nurses in Ukraine.

Q3-Q4 2025

Develop additional modules on high-priority topics including wound management, infection control, ICU care, and care for patients with spinal cord injury for nurses.

Q1-Q2 2026

Pursue observership opportunities for Ukrainian nurses at Houston Methodist, to foster hands-on learning, peer exchange, and leadership development in nursing practice. Expand the program to reach nurses across Ukraine through a Train-the-Trainer model.
